We are pleased to report that our study of genetics and wet AMD has been accepted for publication by Journal of VitreoRetinal Diseases. Our study findings accord with those of prior reports that showed a strong interaction between genetics and AREDS vitamins use in the development of wet AMD. Though initial reports about this interaction were controversial, in the opinion of Principle Investigator Stephen Kaufman, MD the evidence for using genetics to guide AREDS formulation use is now overwhelming. Importantly, there is strong evidence that about 1 in 6 AMD patients who are taking AREDS vitamins have genes that put them at significantly increased risk of wet AMD. Indiscriminate use of AREDS vitamins is likely harming many of our AMD patients. For more information, you may contact Dr. Kaufman at stkaufman@mindspring.com.
